Slayer To Protest Westboro Baptist Church Leader Fred Phelps’ Funeral

kerryking

Carrying signs saying “God Hates Self-Righteous Fanatics” and “At Least Satan Has Good Taste In Music”, members of the heavy metal rock band Slayer today camped outside the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas waiting to protest the funeral of WBC leader Fred Phelps.  An outspoken critic of people of other races, homosexuality, heavy metal and pasteurized milk, Phelps passed away earlier today after suffering a severe heart attack when informed that Ellen DeGeneres has a popular television talk show.  He was 84.

Animosity between Slayer and Westboro has been mounting since Phelps threatened to picket the funeral of Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman last year.  Phelps, who fronted a Carnivore cover band known as “Jesus Hitler” back in the early 90’s, felt that beyond being a group of unwashed heathens, Slayer simply weren’t very good anymore.  “They have profaned the name of Christ!  That is obvious. But worse, they really haven’t recorded anything worth listening to since Divine Intervention!” said Phelps in a fiery sermon 3 months ago.

Phelps’ death has sent shockwaves through the Bigot community.  Several Bigots across America have planned candlelight vigils to mourn the death of the man that some have called “The Godfather of Modern Bigotry”.  His passing has also saddened many closeted Bigots who are now unable able to shake their heads at Phelps’ antics while masking their own hatred in the form of polished and coded political expressions.

Bigots across the world have lost a hero to their cause.  “He was our Harvey Milk,” said teary-eyed Westboro member Harvey Atwater as he heard the news.  “Our President is from Kenya, it’s legal for a donkey to marry a man in most states, and Satan himself is running half of the major television networks as well as the Internet.  America is going to Hell in a handbasket and our greatest leader has fallen.  This is a dark day for this great nation.”

You realize this is a farce, right?

“They have profaned the name of Christ! That is obvious. But worse, they really haven’t recorded anything worth listening to since Divine Intervention!” said Phelps”

I love Slayer as much as the next person, but you guys are really gullible. Don’t be idiots.

a comic dramatic work using buffoonery and horseplay and typically including crude characterization and ludicrously improbable situations.

Who’s being the idiot? It’s called “satire.” You really believe that you are the only person intelligent enough to realize that this wasn’t a genuine story?!?! SMFH. You sir, are a moron.

      • #8 by ralph on April 17, 2014 - 7:05 AM

This is not a “comic dramatic work.” A dramatic work is a piece designed to be performed on the stage. This is not a farce. It is satire. End of discussion, I hope.

It’s because he was either brainwashed or forced/threatened to be apart of a corrupt organization. The most powerful man on the planet with over 500 trillion dollars known as the rothschilds own msm on what to say but don’t care what laws are written as long as the greed keeps ticking on this habitat bubble we live on called Earth. The media or music/movie tv entertainment is connected by the secret society what is being said, censorship controlled box run by psychopaths and sociopaths.

Ok bro, I’m a libertarian, so i’m cool with the small goverment idea, but I have no idea what kind of bullshit sandwich your smoking. Your not even partisan, and considering the contempt with which i hold partisans, that is a high bar. Congrats!

Your just a hate monkey that assembles all the things that humans dislike into a single random imaginary conspiracy, one that intrestingly enough, seems to coincide with all your pre-conceived notions. I’m assuming at this point your Anti-Vaxxer, or that you think big pharma is poisoning the water so they can sell you drugs.

      • #13 by Bryan Miller on March 21, 2014 - 9:58 AM

is fluoride not poison?, yet they seem to have no problem putting it in the water and now they want to put it in baby food, I guess we are not dying of cancer fast enough they need to speed up the process. Yes big pharma makes a lot of money of sick people, is that not obvious? You think after all these years they couldn’t find a real cure for cancer other than some that already work like cannabis oil. Cancer is a multi-billion dollar a year money maker. Following the money usually doesn’t lie. And yes most of the major new organizations around the globe are owned by a few people, and they can show whatever agenda they please or help create a nice brainwashed 2 party system, you know those pesky dems/repubs who are holding back any kind of progression of the human society. As a libertarian you already see the destructive power of the 2 party system and the global media network and the Central banking system, how hard is it really to believe that some this stuff isn’t true and plausible?

Jesus Christ, how many times do I have to say this. *Everything*, including water, is toxic in the wrong amounts. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay based on the portion of it in the water; the incidence of cavities in communities where fluoride is present in the water makes a J-curve if the axes plotted are fluoride parts-per-million against cavities, x-and-y axes respectively, where too little fluoride means that cavities will occur often, and too much will mean that cavities will *also* occur often.

I think what you need to be concerned with is whether multiple sources are simultaneously fluoridating the same water that you are getting access to, or whether your local city officials are retarded and are putting too much of it in. Kids in Uganda with unfluoridated water actually get *less* cavities than certain French or US communities that fluoridate their water, but that is due to a complex chain of things like what those kids eat and whether that water is fluoridated too much, or multiple times. It’s all about proper portioning.

Another thing I’m expecting you to mention is modest measured IQ decreases among populations with overly-fluoridated waters, despite the Flynn Effect pretty much offsetting this. My response is:

Correlation does not necessarily mean causation. I know less on this case than an expert in the field, but I can sure as fuck bet I know more than you, and you can’t just assume that fluoride is the cause in practicality.

For the sake of argument, let’s assume that that is the case: It’s people not doing their job and not measuring the ppm of the Fluoride in public water systems that are at fault, once again. This probably doesn’t happen unless you just add way too much fluoride into the water system, because if proportionality was an issue like it can be predicted to be, we would notice no huge IQ deviations-or drops at all-in populations with modestly fluoridated water.

Slayer? They’re still around? So they’re going to do EXACTLY the same awful thing that Phelps and Westboro had done to so many others. Worse, because it’s clearly a publicity stunt to try to make themselves relevant again. Classless fuckers.

Don’t be so obtuse – in this case it’s appropriate because Phelps and his family/followers are scum, and deserve payback for what they’ve done to others. There’s no sense in extending our broad ideas of civil rights to those that would deny them to us.
And btw – Slayer is still relevant, it’s Metallica that should’ve hung it up long ago.

      • #34 by Chloê Hardin on March 21, 2014 - 11:11 AM

“There’s no sense in extending our broad ideas of civil rights to those that would deny them to us.” Explain why society is offering an open-armed welcome to the bigotry that is “Islam” then. The amount of Imams I’ve heard saying exactly the same as WBC, if not worst, about gays, non-muslims and jews is astounding, yet it seems the lefty hypocrites turn a dear ear when this happens… Try building a church in Saudi Arabia and see how far “liberal thinking” gets you…

He asked people to help others up because for 10 years he’d watched people get thrashed and sometimes killed because of what he was doing on stage and he had finally seen enough. We can only imagine the genuine carnage they were the catalyst for night after night after night. He had seen, and maybe felt responsible for, enough.

He’s gone so forget him and move on. They’ll be many more to take his misguided place.

  51. #93 by Rob Darke on March 21, 2014 - 7:33 PM

Thought this was kind of odd, given that Kerry’s known to be pretty homophobic (I once read an interview in GUITAR WORLD where he spent the whole thing ranting about how gays should go back in the closet, etc because that’s what readers of GUITAR WORLD are interested in hearing about). For a minute, I’d hoped he had a change of heart. I’ve gotta say that I’ve never looked at Slayer the same way after that. Now they’re just a joke without Jeff and Dave. RIP Jeff.

    • #99 by Toni TJ Mitchell on March 22, 2014 - 2:47 PM

In reality they will get what is coming to them as in the heart attack of their beloved pastor. What goes around always comes around. If you lower yourself to their level you are only lowering yourself. You cannot change the minds of these people. Like the old saying goes……….you cannot fix stupid.

    • #100 by Jeffrey Raia on March 22, 2014 - 2:54 PM

Picket their funeral and be just like them?

      • #101 by Kevin on March 22, 2014 - 8:16 PM

So true! Do nothing to show we don’t care!!

    • #102 by Lia Watson on March 22, 2014 - 3:04 PM

Responding to hate with more hate doesn’t help anyone. Christ taught love and forgiveness….not spite. They are absolutely wrong, but it is up to God to judge, not us. The Bible says “pray for those who dispitefully use you.” not seek revenge.

      • #103 by Kathleen Thiele Ball on March 22, 2014 - 7:37 PM

Amen. I feel sorry for the children of the “church” who have been taught this all their lives and don’t know any better.

      • #104 by Blake Bergerson on March 23, 2014 - 3:29 AM

God does not exist. Therefore, he doesn’t have the capability to judge anything. I agree that responding to hate with hate doesn’t help anyone, but beyond that, you are just spouting fairy tails.

      • #105 by Sean Young on March 23, 2014 - 12:30 PM

I like the way that you responded to this, but to say “They are ‘Absolutely’ wrong” I tend to disagree. It may not be up to us to ‘Judge’ but anyone that believes in a “Creator” believes that we have been put here with enough intelligence and basic human morals to determine what is ‘Good’ and what is ‘Bad’ If Not, then why are any of us discussing this in the first place? And the bible may say “pray for those who despitefully use you” BUT, It Also Says “FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD” Nobodies Perfect, Who’s To Say Who’s More Wrong, We Can’t All Agree, But We Can Get Along…
        SMY

      • #106 by Perry on March 23, 2014 - 4:50 PM

well, considering the fact that Slayer isn’t a Christian band, I don’t think they really care what Christ taught. It’s inevitable that someone would protest the funeral and I can think of none more qualified than Slayer.

    • #107 by Kevin on March 22, 2014 - 8:22 PM

I thought so to at first Marina!! But what is the loudest way to say We don’t care about you! Not a Damn thing don’t talk about it or show up! That would tell them we don’t care about you or what you think!!

      • #108 by Sean Daniel-Ennis on March 22, 2014 - 11:20 PM

That *would* be the bigger thing to do…. But what fun would that be?

    • #112 by Julio Andrè Gomez Myhre on March 23, 2014 - 9:09 AM

They are scum for harassing mourners. The same goes for people who follow their example. If you harass mourners; you are scum.

An eye for an eye is a very destructive and juvenile mentality.

tldr; I disagree. Copying them does not teach them squat.

    • #113 by derp on March 23, 2014 - 12:28 PM

the law would get involved, a church can picket anything from a funeral to a cancer research institute for children , society wont like it if you picket a church. freedom of religion would be misconstrued as freedom to shit on your freedom of speech.

    • #114 by chris chamberlin on March 23, 2014 - 2:59 PM

although I understand where youre coming from….I think it would be best to not picket his funeral and just forget that man asap. totally forgetting and not giving him any attention is what he deserves

  53. #115 by Steven on March 21, 2014 - 9:34 PM

Picketing this church does exactly what they want it gives them publicity. The stupid will never learn.

    • #116 by Marina Viktoria Giorgii on March 21, 2014 - 10:21 PM

Not if we have a big celebration, dances, music, etc. while they mourn- and not if their dead leader and father is mocked and insulted. Believe me, that will get the family pretty bad, no matter how much they love publicity. Besides, it was Fred who loved the publicity, the family was abused and cowed by him pretty bad. (Which doesn’t excuse them, since they didn’t kill the guy.) Another possibility is to blow them all to heavens high with their church.

      • #117 by Marina Viktoria Giorgii on March 21, 2014 - 10:25 PM

The fact that none of their victims did that or murderliized any of them is unfathomable to me.

Dude, 40 years ago we had people with the balls to kill a president…AND SUCCEEDED!

Now people get on facebook and gripe and complain..doing nothing about the REAL issues but complaining about them.

      • #119 by David on March 22, 2014 - 12:04 AM

I would have thought Arson was easily an option by now – I can’t believe the number of people who are willing to take the so-called “High Road” on this issue! Stuff that – how many cheeks are you supposed to turn before enough is enough? I would have waged war on these cancerous cretins… AND won by now too… WAY before thier glorious leader fell from his perch… What pathetic assholes…

      • #120 by Corey (@krantz_corey) on March 22, 2014 - 12:40 AM

‘They’ don’t know how to mourn. silence is what makes them nuts. IGNORE IGNORE IGNORE. That way they don’t get the energy they feed off of.

      • #121 by dhodge on March 22, 2014 - 3:20 AM

He was ex communicated. I’m not really sure why they are upset. Not picketing, but celebrating what we believe in at the church would be awesome, all those nutcases have no idea how stupid they look when they stand there holding up signs that say nasty words on them and how it really hurts people.

      • #122 by orakpocalypse on March 22, 2014 - 6:02 AM

      • #123 by Mark on March 22, 2014 - 6:47 AM

You liberals are sick. I don’t care if you don’t agree with someone’s point of view, or even hate their point of view. But it is immoral and unjust to not allow families to pay respects to their loved ones in peace. You are no better than the person you hate.

      • #124 by Marina on March 22, 2014 - 10:24 AM

Did they allow the families of slain soldiers mourn in peace? That Christian forgiveness concept was invented to keep slaves docile. Not only I dont want thesethese cockroaches to mourn in peace, I dont want them to continue thei r toxic existence.

      • #125 by Robert on March 22, 2014 - 7:52 AM

The Westboro Baptist Church doesn’t hold funerals for deceased members. A little research goes a long way.

      • #126 by Nick on March 22, 2014 - 10:03 AM

And what happens the next time there is a significant gay funeral? Do you think your recommendation wouldn’t escalte again through his family when they have a “big celebration” to retaliate.

Relax. You’re just as bad as they are. Live your life.

      • #127 by Stinky Stink on March 22, 2014 - 12:21 PM

Yes, let’s stoop to his level! That’ll teach them! Get over it, dude, it’s so childish to go down to someone you hate’s level

      • #128 by Marina Viktoria Giorgii on March 22, 2014 - 7:55 PM

The sentiment that you’ll be ‘stooping’ or are just as bad as the offender if you retaliate follows from the forgiveness concept which is nothing but an invention to keep the slaves docile. It’s inherited from Christianity, the religion established and used to control the masses since the Roman Empire, and amazingly, nowadays even atheists subscribe to and are poisoned by it. The concept of a bad guy seeing errors of his way because he was forgiven and treated kindly is the biggest pile of manure fed to us since a proclamation that all humans are essentially good. This brainwashing is perpetuated because it makes us easier to control. Meanwhile, we are neither good nor bad, and are just another animal (a comparison is a compliment to us.) In animal kingdom, those who don’t retaliate are eaten. The only reason I wouldn’t kill someone like Fred Phelps or his ilk is because I don’t want to go to prison. There should be no compassion to someone like him and his since they don’t have it for others. Those who bleat otherwise are brainwashed doormats.

      • #129 by Blake Bergerson on March 23, 2014 - 3:41 AM

MARK. You attack the “liberals” because they want to picket this guys funeral, and call then horrible for it. You say that everybody should be able to mourn in peace. The STUPID FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIANS are the ones who picketed first, the death of slayer member whose family just wanted to mourn in peace, but instead, these asshole bible thumpers made slayer’s family feel even worse than the death of a loved one already did. Religion/Christianity/Fundamentalist fuks are the ones who started this. SO DON”T GO BLAMING THIS ON THE LIBERALS. THE DUMBASS CHRISTIAN THUMPERS STARTED IT AND GOT WHAT THEY DESERVED.

      • #130 by James Tesdell Cooper JR. on March 23, 2014 - 8:16 PM

The only reason you don’t kill is because you don’t want to go to prison?!!! You, ma’am, are a psychopath and need to seek help. I’m not kidding. You think you’re making rational points and comparing human beings to animals because you’re not in your right mind. Most people do not think like you. We are essentially good.
The answer to this post (which is a joke) is no, no one should protest or even pay attention to his funeral. That is exactly what he would have wanted; more attention. Ignore them and they will go away. They only exist because the media gives them attention and people follow the stories.

      • #131 by Marina Viktoria Giorgii on March 24, 2014 - 9:24 AM

A desire to kill someone like Phelps is the most natural in the face of his baseness. When I imagine what the mother of Matthew Sheppard went through, the only conceivable reaction I see that a compassionate being can have is fury and desire to erase Phelps and his like from existence. And yes, the only reason that would stop me from killing him then and there, would be the fear of destroying my life because of that cockroach. And by the way, if I’m a psychopath as you say, how come you proclaim that ‘humans are essentially good’? With the number of real psychopaths and people like Fred Phelps, calling humans ‘essentially good’ is an idealistic shit-spewing. U can’t pick and choose. And animals are much better than people, they kill only for food- as the nature intended, they take care of their own, and, unlike humans, don’t commit atrocities.

    • #139 by Leslie Diffin on March 22, 2014 - 3:07 AM

As a Christian, you are awfully judgmental. Jesus didn’t ask you to judge, music or anothers (quite skewed) beliefs. And Slayer is still just as significantly amazing as ever…

    • #140 by Satan Spawn of Evil Hellish Rape Torture Killings on March 22, 2014 - 6:33 AM

So you listened to Slayer? See you in Hell my friend.

    • #141 by Bingo on March 22, 2014 - 12:13 PM

Yer an idiot, Bob. For one, you’re getting all riled up over satire here. But what really makes you special is your first sentence. “As a Christian I despise…” Bwahaha! As a human, fairly spiritual/agnostic…that’s right, we don’t fuckin know!…I have taken the liberty of assuming that your big honcho Haysoos wouldn’t tell you to despise anything. And finally, what music do you listen to? Sounds like you never took a chance if you can’t handle heavy metal, country, or rap. If one man, had one home, in one world, he’d live alone without variety, full of anxiety, no one to point at, question, or even talk to in his private grave, no matter what color, he wouldn’t be saved from hell, he dwells, a closed mind playing the part of prison cells.

  56. #142 by Melanie on March 21, 2014 - 11:25 PM

I think his passing should be ignored. To protest would only validate to the family that they had some sort of affect on people. Best to keep pretending they don’t exist and not allow them to waste a moment of our lives.

  57. #143 by George on March 21, 2014 - 11:51 PM

Go slayer. Thay had the gall to protest at fallen Marines funeral. The phoney religious people need to go away. Fuk-em. Slayer You protst that funeral and I’ll go buy five cd’s.

  58. #144 by EB HENNINGS on March 22, 2014 - 12:12 AM

And how does that help anyone? Wouldn’t it make more sense to turn the other cheek and show you truly have God in your heart. This won’t change the past. It only perpetuates the ugliness.

  59. #145 by Rocksteady on March 22, 2014 - 12:41 AM

I get and enjoy the satire here. My worry is that people really want to protest at his funeral. First off, giving them attention keeps them relevant. Second, they pretty much grow every time they figure out how to get a lawsuit. I mean, people do know this is a family of lawyers, right?!? The prick is dead. I’m off to hate myself for giving this subject more bandwidth…

I’m not defending the guy in any way, but the comment about him being an outspoken critic of people of other races is not correct. As a civil rights attorney, he, surprisingly, played a huge rule in fighting to end Jim Crow laws in Kansas. Was he still a bigot? Of course, but a racist he was not.

  64. #152 by Chris Zoah Williams on March 22, 2014 - 1:31 PM

Yes it is common to to do what they have done back to them by why is Slayer not being the better man. So many people look up to Slayer, and their music; why show them you can do this. You should be the better man and stand up and say yes what he did was wrong; But what we will do will be right. God doesn’t judge he forgives; and we should forgive also. This all comes down to morals. Yes Phelps morals were sorely lacking; but our morals are still in tack. Slayer I know you want to picket and scream and tell the world what he did was wrong. But doing what is right is better.

  76. #164 by Jordan Vaine on March 24, 2014 - 5:37 PM

I think George Takei said it best:

“I take no solace or joy in this man’s passing. We will not dance upon his grave, nor stand vigil at his funeral holding ‘God Hates Freds’ signs, tempting as it may be. He was a tormented soul, who tormented so many. Hate never wins out in the end. It instead goes always to its lonely, dusty end.”

Don’t sink to Phelp’s disgusting level, Slayer. You’re way too good for that.
